RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
